The Unavoidable Reality of Divine Judgment
The phrase “You can run, but you can’t hide” was first attributed to the American boxer, Joe Louis (1914-1981) who was quoted as having said this about his fight with Billy Conn on June 18, 1941, a fight that Louis won. This phrase has become a favorite with many people, heard and repeated countless times, as one person has interpreted its meaning: “You can try to escape from what you fear, but eventually you will have to face it”, Gregory Y. Titelman, Random House, New York, 1996.
We use this phrase now to describe the reality of our life regarding reconciliation with God. Regardless of how much we may busy ourselves with the cares of this world filling each day, month and year, we nonetheless eventually run out of time. We can embrace our accountability to God or reject it, even ignore it or claim God does not exist, but the reality does not change.
We will stand before Jesus in judgment, and we will be accountable. The Father, through the Son, has offered us eternal life, if we accept it on His terms. Too often we think there is wiggle-room on the conditions of salvation, something like ‘many pathways leading to heaven’, but the Bible says otherwise. There is only one, and that is through Jesus.
What "Through Jesus" Truly Means
When we say “through Jesus” we quote Him saying “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6. We need to remind ourselves often that Jesus does not talk the way we commonly do; He always gets right to the point and means what He says – no exceptions.
So what does He mean when He says, “through Me”? Jesus is indisputably our role model. He is our pattern we are to follow, in everything. To be like Jesus should be the aspiration of everyone who calls themselves a Christian. Can we do this perfectly? Of course not, but it should never be diminished as our constant goal.
You don’t target practice aiming for just anywhere on the target, you aim for the bullseye and consider your performance by how close you get to it. God knows our hearts! Nothing is hidden from God. It’s not just Him watching us in the here and now. He already knows everything thing we will ever do from before the beginning of the world. If our aspiration is to be something less than being like Christ, we will most certainly live according to our lowered expectation.
Christ as Our Unambiguous Benchmark
In 1 John 3:3 we are given: “And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” No ambiguity here! Our benchmark is Christ and nothing less, so what are we aiming for? Again, John tells us in 1 John 3:7 “Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.” Jesus is always our center point. If we are not willing to aim accordingly, we may as well be blindfolded, and indeed, we are.
