Witness To The Truth

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

The Meaning of “Exhort

Merriam-Webster gives us the definition for the word exhort  as meaning to incite by argument or advice; to urge strongly; to give warnings; to make urgent appeals.  According to Strong’s Hebrew and Greek Dictionary, the word ‘exhort’ and its derivatives translate from original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts 108 times in the KJV Bible where the reference code ‘G3870’ appears. Clearly this verb is very active communicating a swift response being required from the reader regarding the context where it is used.

Exhortation in Hebrews 3:13

The phrase “Exhort One Another Daily” in Hebrews 3:13 invites us to pause and look deeper into its meaning and weight. Easy as it is for us to just read over this word as we study the scriptures, it packs quite a punch when you see it for what it is. When the writer wrote in Hebrews 3:13, “but exhort one another daily, while it is called ‘today’, lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” we realize the impact of these words. He is communicating very important instructions to us here! Not only are we to have this sense of urgency, but our ability to resist the onslaught of sin’s deceitfulness is at stake.

The Call to Daily Action

“Daily” the author says, exposing the weakness of human nature to quickly forget things, even truly important things like this, so we need redundancy and reinforcement of mission-critical concerns every day.

A Challenge for Believers

Do we, as believers in Christ, have this sense of urgency in our daily walk and message of salvation to the world? If we don’t, consider what Hebrews is telling us; do we need to confess that we have been lacking, and that it is not a profitable state to be in? If truly the Spirit of God resides in us, if truly we abide in Christ, if truly we are born-again, would we not already be exhorting one another without this warning?

Humbled and Quickened

When we look at this with eyes that see, we are both humbled and quickened, humbled by our past complacencies and quickened to focus on the importance of the blessed message we have received through the gospel and ministry of Jesus Christ. We must share our Bible truths with those who have not yet received them and exhort each other daily to be living the life we are called to live. Considering what Christ has done for us, are we comfortable giving Him anything less than our full effort?

Our Final Exhortation to You

Please keep in mind, by way of this word “exhort”, this message came from Hebrews and other Bible authors who have used this word when communicating God’s messages to us, and we are only voicing agreement with them, enthusiastically embracing the motivation we find in this word.

And now, we exhort our readers to do likewise.
