Unworthy Servants: no special reward for doing our duty

Table of Contents

(7) “And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘come at once and sit down to eat’?

(8) But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’?

(9) Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not.

(10) So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, you are to say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.'”

Obedience Is Our Duty, Not a Basis for Reward

It is very easy to fall into the trap of thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought simply because we are being obedient to God’s commandments.

Jesus dispels that notion altogether by telling us that doing our duty does not warrant His gratitude or favor. It is expected of us. We should have no inflated opinion of ourselves for having done so. Obedience should be conducted with genuine faithfulness and humility

What It Means to Have a Servant’s Heart

What does it mean to have a “servant’s heart” in a posture acceptable to God? First of all, it requires a proper attitude toward our master. God is God and we are not! He created us for His purpose, for His pleasure, for the tasks He has prepared for us to do before the creation was made, Ephesians 2:10.

The proper heart of God’s servant abides in His mercy and grace towards us. It seeks after His approval out of love for Him and does so without an anticipated obligation of gratitude or reward.

We are privileged to serve God and to abide in Him, knowing in part how truly awesome He is, and how miserable we are without Him. We should forever be humble before Him and grateful He has seen fit to include us in His kingdom and has granted to us an eternal life where we will serve Him!

Will we not pray: “Please, Father God, please grant me a servant’s heart that I might show my love for You in a proper and reverent manner?” A good servant does the will of his master: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” Matthew 7:21.

The Dangers of Legalism and Self-Righteousness

In summary, this teaching from Jesus should put an end to the legalistic perspective that people can be justified through keeping the laws of God. We are commanded to obey Him, yet we cannot earn God’s favor by doing what He has commanded us to do, nor does He owe us anything for having done so.

When we live a new life in the Spirit, we abandon all pretense, all temptation to self-righteousness. Our focus is on our Savior and what He has done for us. We, in Him, receive everything, yet deserve nothing.  This is a wonderful fulfillment of faith and mercy.
