Eternal Life and What It Costs Us
The price of eternal life was paid for by our Savior, Jesus Christ Romans 6:23. It is granted to us through His willingness to forgive us our sins. This is justification. But do we consider eternal life to cost us anything? We know we cannot earn it Ephesians 2:8-10 and this leads believers to think of grace like a blank check. To do so is a mistake, and the Bible clearly teaches against it. If we view grace in this manner, we will find the price is too high.
The Cycle of Sin and Reset
In this life with all its demands on us, we are distracted and tempted constantly. Our human nature is limited, and it can be so overwhelming for many people that they stumble repeatedly. Must it always be like that? Are we cursed to repeat a loop of seemingly endless “resets” each time we fail to do the will of the Father, falling to our knees and confessing our failures once again?
The Deceptive Comfort of False Grace
The answer is profoundly no; we are not doomed to conform to this cycle! So, if knowing the reward of eternal life with God isn’t enough to maintain obedience in us, what will? If we are covered by grace, is this really a problem? All Christians experience this to some degree.
Most denominations will give you some teaching that this is the whole purpose of grace, saying “God knows our limits, He knows our condition and, in His mercy, He has given us Jesus to be our forever advocate before the throne.” This leaves the believer comfortable with continued sin in their lives yet having an untroubled mind about their salvation. This type of doctrine has a high appeal and most people will prefer this doctrine over any other, but does the Bible truly teach this?
In truth, the Bible does not teach this, and what is deficient in this doctrine is what will keep its adherents out of the kingdom. But do we have an open mind that will allow sound doctrine of the Bible to correct our path? Consider what price we pay if we continue down this path to its eventual end. Do we forfeit salvation? We believe so, and if we are correct, the price is too high. We continue doing sinful things with a conscience that does not trouble us.
The Truth That Frees Us
The Bible teaches us that we are to know the truth, and it will set us free. Jesus said it in John 8:31-36 where He explains this freedom. It is the freedom from the cycle of sin that plagues us. In verse 34 Jesus said “… Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” Repeat offenders are addicted to sin and it enslaves them. The truth He tells us will set us from from it.
Are We Free From Sin or Free to Sin?
The real question we should be asking ourselves: Is Jesus freeing us from the punishment of sin or liberating us from committing sin altogether? The key is for us to focus on the word “slave”. The subject is our addiction to disobedience. This is what the truth should free us from, clearly the continuance of sinning.
Our confirmation that this is truly what Jesus is telling us can be found in 1 John 3:9, Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
The Price of Continued Disobedience
The price of continued disobedience is too high! We must obey God. See: Hebrews 10:26-31. If after reading this, do you doubt the message, or struggle with how to apply what you read to your daily life? If so, please contact us. For some people this transition from a life of sin to a life of obedience generates many questions.
If you consult with your familiar doctrinal sources, you will likely be told not to worry about it; you are covered by grace. If that happens, you are just hearing the same false doctrine and recommitting yourself to it. Please, we implore you, for your own eternal security, break away from this false doctrine. Why doubt the words of Jesus and John. Are they not credible witnesses of truth?
