Millennial Reign of Christ: What Scripture Actually Teaches

Table of Contents

INTRODUCTION

To understand the Millennial reign of Christ, we must see that it is not a prophetic time hidden in symbolism, nor should we see it blurred by the traditions of men—but sadly, it has been misrepresented within our churches for ages.

Rather than identifying doctrinal error by denominations in this article (for those interested), we direct our readers to our AI inquiry of denominational viewpoints concerning the Millennium. You can get to it by clicking the following link: The Millennial Reign of Christ—What the Denominations Preach.

Scripture speaks plainly about a future reign of Christ on this earth. It will:

  • Be a real kingdom,
  • Be ruled by a real King,
  • Last for 1,000 years, and
  • Fulfill many real promises God made long ago.

It is very important we both understand this and remember it. The Millennial Age marks the arrival of a world-controlling Monarchy that will subordinate all other nations to it, Isaiah 60:12 > Zechariah 14:17-19 > Revelation 12:5 > Revelation 19:15. The term, “rod of iron”, used to describe the extent of force Jesus will employ, suggests the authority of Christ will not be universally welcome. The need for a rod of iron suggests the policies and laws enforced by the Monarchy will be met with levels of resistance, as you don’t need force to rule happy, willing subjects.

The human heart in its unregenerate state can always resist the authority of God to the extent it is able. The Millennial reign of Christ will provide 1,000 years of righteous rule by Christ and His saints, governing a people who still need redemption, and still have the seeds of rebellion in their hearts. This Age will be a very different world than we have seen for the past 6,000 years.

This article highlights what Scripture plainly tells us about the Millennial Kingdom. As the core (80%) of this article is compiled from Scripture citations we have gathered, our hope is to expose misleading doctrines in a biblically authoritative manner. The Bible is our “only” dependable source of truth—and it verifies itself. When humans step in and begin to explain what the Bible is saying, to interpret what it means, error creeps in, some accidental and some diabolically deliberate.

NEXT is a list of key events. The Millennial Age begins on day one when Jesus returns to earth in clouds of glory, and according to the Bible, events will happen in the following sequence. Each event will be biblically affirmed within its own section of this article.

A simple fact—that the Bible describes the future reign of Christ on earth with many prophetic references detailing aspects of His return and reign. In fending off false doctrinal claims that don’t agree with the Bible, we stand on high ground—the Word of God—and it only speaks the truth.

As we explore the evidence given for the events shown above, we will keep our comments to a minimum. We are not seeking to explain what the Bible says because we believe the strength is in the original words, not commentary. All Bible quotes, both written and “pop up” are taken from the New King James Version Bible. Let us now begin our appreciation of the biblical teachings concerning the Millennial reign of Christ.

1. Christ Returns in Power and Glory

→ What God has promised, He is faithful to perform, He does not lie.

Numbers 23:19
God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

Matthew 16:27
For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.

Matthew 24:30
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Matthew 25:31
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.

Luke 21:25–27
25“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

Acts 1:9-11
9Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

2 Thessalonians 1:7-10
7and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.

Revelation 1:7
Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Zechariah 14:3-4
3Then the LORD will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. 4And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south.

→ We are convinced that Jesus, the King of kings, will return to this earth in power and glory, just as the Bible prophesied.

2/3/4. Saints–Resurrected/Transformed/Gathered

1 Thessalonians 4:13-17
13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

→ The above five verses cover events 2, 3 and 4. Other verses that confirm or add perspective include:

 1 Corinthians 15:52
in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Matthew 24:31
And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Mark 13:27
And then He will send His angels, and gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven.

Philippians 3:20-21
21For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

1 John 3:2
Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

→ “The dead in Christ” includes every single human being that ever lived that is saved. Every righteous person, every faithful prophet or priest, from slave to king, all people covered by the blood of the Covenants, Old and New, will be raised from the dead. As all are included, not one such person will fail to witness the splendor of the return of the King, 1 Corinthians 15:51-52.

5. Destruction of the Antichrist, False Prophet, and Wicked

Revelation 19:17-21
17Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and gather together for the supper of the great God, 18that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.”

19And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.

→ The beast is a human being known by other names in the Bible: the lawless one, the man of sin, The Antichrist of the great tribulation, and the number 666. The following bullet list builds the evidence for this, all describing the same individual:

    • Empowered by SatanRevelation 13:2 “the dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.”
    • Working of Satan2 Thessalonians 2:9 “the coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan”
    • Speaks blasphemiesRevelation 13:5–6 “he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God”
    • Exalts himself as God2 Thessalonians 2:4 “showing himself that he is God”
    • Makes war with the saintsRevelation 13:7 “it was granted to him to make war with the saints”
    • Persecutes the saintsDaniel 7:21 “the same horn was making war against the saints”
    • Deceives with signs2 Thessalonians 2:10 “with all unrighteous deception”
    • Performs false wondersRevelation 13:13–14 “he performs great signs… deceives those who dwell on the earth”
    • Global authorityRevelation 13:7–8 “authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation”
    • Destroyed at Christ’s coming2 Thessalonians 2:8 “whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth”
    • Cast alive into the lake of fireRevelation 19:20 “the beast was captured… cast alive into the lake of fire”
    • A man with a numberRevelation 13:18 “the number of a man… 666”

6. The Binding of Satan

Revelation 20:1-3
1Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.

→ Though the Bible only gives us this brief description of the binding of Satan, it speaks volumes. If we believe the Bible to be true and inerrant, we know that Satan has been the god of this world since the fall of Adam and Eve. Satan’s ability to tempt the nations has been granted to him all this time.

→ To remove Satan’s access to humanity and replace it with full access to Jesus Christ, we have a paradigm shift unequal since the creation of time. We would expect a dramatic improvement in humanity’s acceptance of God and willingness to obey Him. Perhaps too, we will see the extent that humanity will continue to resist God, even in a world of righteous rule with great blessings. This dynamic will be put to the test for 1,000 years.

7. Establishment of Christ's Earthly Kingdom

→ The Millennial Reign of Christ is a radical world-changing event, transforming the earth under His righteous rule. This transformation begins here in section 7 and continues through section 10. The following passages are rich with information concerning the government of Christ on earth in the millennial reign. Some redundancy occurs, but unique information appears throughout.

  Psalms 2:6-9
6“Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.” 7“I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”

Isaiah 9:6-7
6For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 2:2-4
2Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD’s house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it.

3Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.

Isaiah 11:1-5
1There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

3His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; 4But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. 5Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist.

Jeremiah 23:5-6
5“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. 6In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Jeremiah 33:14-17
14‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that I will perform that good thing which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah: 15‘In those days and at that time I will cause to grow up to David A Branch of righteousness; He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. 16In those days Judah will be saved, And Jerusalem will dwell safely. And this is the name by which she will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.’ 17“For thus says the LORD: ‘David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel;

Ezekiel 37:24-25
24“David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd; they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them. 25Then they shall dwell in the land that I have given to Jacob My servant, where your fathers dwelt; and they shall dwell there, they, their children, and their children’s children, forever; and My servant David shall be their prince forever.

Daniel 2:44
And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

Daniel 7:13-14
13“I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. 14Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.

Zechariah 14:9
And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be “The LORD is one,” And His name one.

Revelation 11:15
Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”

Revelation 19:15-16
15Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

Revelation 20:4
And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

→ The CENTRAL government of Christ in the Millennium will be the first and only perfectly righteous administration this world will ever know. It will be the nation of Israel and its form of government, a monarchy— its King, eternal, and His administrators will be the righteous saints that were saved throughout history. All nations will acknowledge its authority, and it will rule in absolute power from its capital—Jerusalem, in restored Israel.

8. Restoration of Israel

→ The restoration of Israel is well documented in the Bible and can be somewhat grouped by category, as follows:

  • CORE PROPHECIES

 Isaiah 11:11–12
11It shall come to pass in that day That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time To recover the remnant of His people who are left, From Assyria and Egypt, From Pathros and Cush, From Elam and Shinar, From Hamath and the islands of the sea. 12He will set up a banner for the nations, And will assemble the outcasts of Israel, And gather together the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth.

 Isaiah 27:12–13
12And it shall come to pass in that day That the LORD will thresh, From the channel of the River to the Brook of Egypt; And you will be gathered one by one, O you children of Israel. 13So it shall be in that day: The great trumpet will be blown; They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, And shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

 Isaiah 49:22–23
22Thus says the Lord GOD: “Behold, I will lift My hand in an oath to the nations, And set up My standard for the peoples; They shall bring your sons in their arms, And your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders; 23Kings shall be your foster fathers, And their queens your nursing mothers; They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth, And lick up the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am the LORD, For they shall not be ashamed who wait for Me.”

  • PROPHECIES CONCERNING THE LAND

Jeremiah 30:3
For behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’ says the LORD. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.’ “

Jeremiah 30:8–10
8‘For it shall come to pass in that day,’ Says the LORD of hosts, ‘That I will break his yoke from your neck, And will burst your bonds; Foreigners shall no more enslave them. 9But they shall serve the LORD their God, And David their king, Whom I will raise up for them. 10‘Therefore do not fear, O My servant Jacob,’ says the LORD, ‘Nor be dismayed, O Israel; For behold, I will save you from afar, And your seed from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return, have rest and be quiet, And no one shall make him afraid.

Jeremiah 31:8–10
8Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth, Among them the blind and the lame, The woman with child And the one who labors with child, together; A great throng shall return there. 9They shall come with weeping, And with supplications I will lead them. I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters, In a straight way in which they shall not stumble; For I am a Father to Israel, And Ephraim is My firstborn. 10“Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, And declare it in the isles afar off, and say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, And keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’

Jeremiah 32:37–41
37Behold, I will gather them out of all countries where I have driven them in My anger, in My fury, and in great wrath; I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely. 38They shall be My people, and I will be their God; 39then I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for the good of them and their children after them.

40And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me. 41Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will assuredly plant them in this land, with all My heart and with all My soul.’

Ezekiel 20:34–38
34I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand, with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out. 35And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will plead My case with you face to face. 36Just as I pleaded My case with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will plead My case with you,” says the Lord GOD.

37“I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant; 38I will purge the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against Me; I will bring them out of the country where they dwell, but they shall not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

Ezekiel 36:33–36
33‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be rebuilt. 34The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by. 35So they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. I, the LORD, have spoken it, and I will do it.”

Ezekiel 37:21–22
21″Then say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Surely I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, wherever they have gone, and will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land; 22and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king over them all; they shall no longer be two nations, nor shall they ever be divided into two kingdoms again.

Ezekiel 37:25
Then they shall dwell in the land that I have given to Jacob My servant, where your fathers dwelt; and they shall dwell there, they, their children, and their children’s children, forever; and My servant David shall be their prince forever.

  • PROPHECIES CONCERNING SPIRITUAL RESTORATION

Ezekiel 36:25–26
25Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh

 Ezekiel 37:24
“David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd; they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them.

Ezekiel 37:26-28
26Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; I will establish them and multiply them, and I will set My sanctuary in their midst forevermore. 27My tabernacle also shall be with them; indeed I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 28The nations also will know that I, the LORD, sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.” ‘ ”

Hosea 3:4–5
4For the children of Israel shall abide many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, without ephod or teraphim. 5Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They shall fear the LORD and His goodness in the latter days.

Isaiah 61:10-11
10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11For as the earth brings forth its bud, As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, So the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

  • JERUSALEM RESTORED AS THE CENTER

Isaiah 2:3
Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 3:17
“At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the LORD, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts.

Zechariah 8:3–6
3“Thus says the LORD: ‘I will return to Zion, And dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth, The Mountain of the LORD of hosts, The Holy Mountain.’ 4“Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Old men and old women shall again sit In the streets of Jerusalem, Each one with his staff in his hand Because of great age. 5The streets of the city Shall be full of boys and girls Playing in its streets.’ 6“Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘If it is marvelous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, Will it also be marvelous in My eyes?’ Says the LORD hosts.

Zechariah 12:10
“And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.

Zechariah 13:1
“In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.

Zechariah 13:9
I will bring the one-third through the fire, Will refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people’; And each one will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’ ”

Isaiah 60:1–5
1Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. 2For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the LORD will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you.

3The Gentiles shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising. 4“Lift up your eyes all around, and see: They all gather together, they come to you; Your sons shall come from afar, And your daughters shall be nursed at your side.

5Then you shall see and become radiant, And your heart shall swell with joy; Because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, The wealth of the Gentiles shall come to you.

Isaiah 60:10–14
10“The sons of foreigners shall build up your walls, And their kings shall minister to you; For in My wrath I struck you, But in My favor I have had mercy on you. 11Therefore your gates shall be open continually; They shall not be shut day or night, That men may bring to you the wealth of the Gentiles, And their kings in procession. 12For the nation and kingdom which will not serve you shall perish, And those nations shall be utterly ruined.

13“The glory of Lebanon shall come to you, The cypress, the pine, and the box tree together, To beautify the place of My sanctuary; And I will make the place of My feet glorious. 14Also the sons of those who afflicted you Shall come bowing to you, And all those who despised you shall fall prostrate at the soles of your feet; And they shall call you The City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

  • FINAL RESTORATION (END OF AGE)

 Romans 11:25–27
25For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:

“The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
27For this is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins.”

Acts 3:19–21
19Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, 21whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.

→ We see in these many verses that God does in fact restore Israel, in this world, in this life. The Millennial Kingdom would be incomplete without the fulfillment of these prophecies.

9. The Renewal of Creation

→ There are major improvements in the creation when Jesus returns to reign for 1,000 years. The Bible gives us many details in the following areas of renewal which we have grouped:

  • Renewal of the ANIMAL KINGDOM

Isaiah 11:6-9
6“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them. 7The cow and the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. 9They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea.

Isaiah 65:25
The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, The lion shall eat straw like the ox, And dust shall be the serpent’s food. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,” Says the LORD.

  • Renewal of the Land

Isaiah 35:1-2
1The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose; 2It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, Even with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, The excellence of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, The excellency of our God.

Isaiah 35:6-7
6Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert. 7The parched ground shall become a pool, And the thirsty land springs of water; In the habitation of jackals, where each lay, There shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

Isaiah 41:18-19
18I will open rivers in desolate heights, And fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, And the dry land springs of water. 19I will plant in the wilderness the cedar and the acacia tree, The myrtle and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the cypress tree and the pine And the box tree together, 20That they may see and know, And consider and understand together, That the hand of the LORD has done this, And the Holy One of Israel has created it.

Isaiah 55:12-13
12“For you shall go out with joy, And be led out with peace; The mountains and the hills Shall break forth into singing before you, And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. 13Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, And instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree; And it shall be to the LORD for a name, For an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

  • Global Peace and Removal of Harm

Isaiah 11:9
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea.

Isaiah 32:15-18
15Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, And the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, And the fruitful field is counted as a forest. 16Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, And righteousness remain in the fruitful field. 17The work of righteousness will be peace, And the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever. 18My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation, In secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places,

  • Agriculture and Ecological Restoration

Amos 9:13-15
13“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, And all the hills shall flow with it. 14I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them. 15I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be pulled up From the land I have given them,” Says the LORD your God.

Joel 2:21-27
21Fear not, O land; Be glad and rejoice, For the LORD has done marvelous things! 22Do not be afraid, you beasts of the field; For the open pastures are springing up, And the tree bears its fruit; The fig tree and the vine yield their strength. 23Be glad then, you children of Zion, And rejoice in the LORD your God; For He has given you the former rain faithfully, And He will cause the rain to come down for you—The former rain, And the latter rain in the first month. 24The threshing floors shall be full of wheat, And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.

25“So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, The crawling locust, The consuming locust, And the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you. 26You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, And praise the name of the LORD your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; And My people shall never be put to shame. 27Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am the LORD your God And there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame.

  • Renewal of Light, Healing, and Environment

Isaiah 30:23-26
23Then He will give the rain for your seed With which you sow the ground, And bread of the increase of the earth; It will be fat and plentiful. In that day your cattle will feed In large pastures. 24Likewise the oxen and the young donkeys that work the ground Will eat cured fodder, Which has been winnowed with the shovel and fan.

25There will be on every high mountain And on every high hill Rivers and streams of waters, In the day of the great slaughter, When the towers fall. 26Moreover the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, And the light of the sun will be sevenfold, As the light of seven days, In the day that the LORD binds up the bruise of His people And heals the stroke of their wound.

Isaiah 60:19-20
19“The sun shall no longer be your light by day, Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you; But the LORD will be to you an everlasting light, And your God your glory. 20Your sun shall no longer go down, Nor shall your moon withdraw itself; For the LORD will be your everlasting light, And the days of your mourning shall be ended.

Isaiah 35:5-6
5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. 6Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert.

Jeremiah 30:17
For I will restore health to you And heal you of your wounds,’ says the LORD, ‘Because they called you an outcast saying: “This is Zion; No one seeks her.” ‘

  • Worldwide Safety and Stability

Micah 4:3-4
3He shall judge between many peoples, And rebuke strong nations afar off; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. 4But everyone shall sit under his vine and under his fig tree, And no one shall make them afraid; For the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.

Zechariah 14:8-11
8And in that day it shall be—That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea; In both summer and winter it shall occur. 9And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be “The LORD is one,” And His name one.

10All the land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be raised up and inhabited in her place from Benjamin’s Gate to the place of the First Gate and the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. 11The people shall dwell in it; And no longer shall there be utter destruction, But Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.

→ The world in the Millennial period will be radically improved. We will have a righteous government and the lifting of many of the curses placed on the world when sin entered it. The physical presence of God the Son leading the nations will bring worldwide peace, long life and safety. But it will not be perfected. That will come after this world is replaced by the New Earth.

10. The Worship of Christ in the Millennium

Isaiah 2:2-3
2Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD’s house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. 3Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Isaiah 27:13
So it shall be in that day: The great trumpet will be blown; They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, And shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 3:17
“At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the LORD, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts.

Zechariah 14:16-19
16And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. 17And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, on them there will be no rain.

18If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. 19This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.

Isaiah 54:13
All your children shall be taught by the LORD, And great shall be the peace of your children.

Revelation 15:3–4
3They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints! 4Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, For Your judgments have been manifested.”

Malachi 1:11
For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,” Says the LORD of hosts.

→ In the millennium it is reasonable to think there will be only one religion, because false gods will have been removed when the Laws of God are enforced. Also reasonable would be the disappearance of denominations. Paul taught against divisiveness, and logically we expect it will end as well, Ephesians 4:3-6. Imagine such a world!

11. The Final Rebellion

→ The final rebellion account in the Bible is brief. We do not know how much time it will span, but we hope it is over quickly. There is no delight to be taken in the destruction of the lost souls.

Revelation 20:7-10
7Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.

9They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

12. Judgment of the Nations

Matthew 25:31-46
31“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

34Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

41“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

44“Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

→ Interesting that Jesus gives us examples of “fruit” that people produce, good trees that bear good fruit and bad trees that bear bad fruit, Matthew 7:17-19. He makes it clear that loving others is the same as loving Him. We see that people who do not love others do not belong in the kingdom. Is this the only criteria for entry into the kingdom? No, we must be born again and the fruit that rebirth produces in us is holiness, John 3:3-15 and 1 John 3:1-10.

13. The Great White Throne

Revelation 20:5
But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished.

 Revelation 20:11-15
11Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.

And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

14. The New Heavens and New Earth

→ The new heavens and new earth begin when the old heavens and old earth are removed. We know that the first heaven and earth were created for a “temporary” purpose. When their function is fulfilled, they are discarded. For those interested: 1stjohn.net researched and wrote the article titled: Does The Universe Really Exist? that explores the biblical realities of our temporary creation, what it is and possibly is not.

Isa 66:22
22“For as the new heavens and the new earth Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the LORD, “So shall your descendants and your name remain. 23And it shall come to pass That from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the LORD.

Rev 21:1-7
1Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

4And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” 5Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”

6And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

→ The key to understanding who the new heavens and new earth were made for lies in verse 7: “He who overcomes.” They inherit it, and God acknowledges them as sons and daughters—forever.

Summarizing the Millennial Reign of Christ

Someday, and we believe soon, Jesus will return to earth in glory. Jesus will reign as King of kings for 1,000 years. He will reign in absolute authority without interference from Satan. All of the people who have been redeemed through the previous 6,000 years will be given eternal life and be assisting Christ in conducting His Lordship over the earth. Imagine millions of immortals spread throughout the world, all having assignments as part of the government of Christ. This is coming and it is real.

We at 1stjohn.net have made every effort to ensure this article is worthy of our faith in Christ Jesus. We hope the topic of the Millennial Reign of Christ has blessed you. In it we see “salvation” in this age as an integral part of God’s plan as all saved people will reign with Christ. The glory belongs to our God!
