Led by the Holy Spirit to Seek Truth
What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? As Christians we hold to the truth that without the Holy Spirit, we cannot understand the mysteries of God. This is scriptural bedrock. The mysteries of God? Does this pique our curiosities? If we don’t know what they are, does that leave us with a handicap? We need to know the answers to these questions as many sincere believers have never been taught these things clearly.
Being led by the Holy Spirit, we search the written Word to gain insight into the knowledge of God. As believers in Christ, we desire to know the heart of God and His will in our lives, so we can abide in His keeping. What separates Christians from everyone else is our desire to know and serve God. He is “up there” and we are “down here”. Scripture reminds us of this distance: “Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest?” Isaiah 66:1.
The Holy Spirit dwelling in us is not optional if we are to please God. All good things come to us through the Holy Spirit. He is at work continuously, inviting those who have not yet accepted Christ, and educating those who have. He stimulates our minds to accept Bible truth, and without His help, we cannot enter into a relationship with the Father, Son and Spirit. Wisdom comes to us through the work of the Holy Spirit. Paul does a brilliant job explaining these essentials to us in the eleven verses that follow:
Paul Reveals the Mystery of God’s Wisdom
6However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 10But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:6-16.
Drawn to Christ by the Father Through the Spirit
44No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, ‘and they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me—John 6:44-45
Jesus tells us that we must be called by the Father, which He accomplishes through His Spirit. This is an invitation to faith from God, and we cannot be drawn to God by own effort. Salvation is truly a work of God. But though we have been invited, we can reply with: “not interested”, or “maybe someday but not right now”, or worse, “stop bothering me.”
Willingness is at the heart of rebirth and without it we cannot be saved. No one is saved apart from obedience. Not perfect obedience, but a willing obedience that refuses compromise. Anything less than this is not rebirth.
To live a new life in Christ requires our acceptance, not just words, but loyalty in the form of obedience. New life does not look like the old life with a new shirt and shoes. We get stripped naked, cleansed of our old unrighteousness and dressed in holy garments of praise and godliness. Our purity comes in this life, by our choice—1 John 3:3.
Yes! But some may assume this purity only comes after resurrection. This only raises the question: “Do we even know what it means to be drawn to Christ?” It means that we will be taught by God (Jesus who only speaks the words of the Father— John 12:49. When we follow the teachings of Jesus, we receive the truth that sets us free, John 8:32 free from sin, in this life, here and now.
Many believers today have been taught doctrines that separate them from the truth that saves. The Holy Spirit dwelling in us means “God” is dwelling in us. When we accept His Spirit, He leads and we must follow. If we are not willing, then it doesn’t happen. God never overrides our free will. If we won’t let Him transform us, we remain as we were—lost.
Becoming Spiritually Prepared for His Return
What better revelation can we hope to find that will prepare us for the return of Jesus than the parable He gave us of the ten virgins, Matthew 25:1-13. If we were to believe common doctrines taught today, all ten virgins would be admitted to the marriage feast. Five would be admitted because they were ready, and the other five would be admitted because they were covered by grace, the worthiness of the groom would fulfill their requirement for readiness, and they would be welcomed in. But this is not what happened, did it?
If we know what the Bible teaches firsthand, “sound doctrine”, we cannot be deceived by false doctrines. We can’t, because we already know sound doctrine. We have the evidence here, in the parable given by Jesus, that biblical ignorance will not be covered by grace, and we need to acknowledge this or suffer the consequence. Poor planning followed by wishful thinking will not rule the day. We may get by with it for now, a false comfort allowing us to side-step the commitment to truly follow Christ, but in the end, we suffer eternal loss.
We strongly encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ to know the written Word, study it daily, and have it in our hearts continuously— 2 Timothy 2:15. The same Spirit who calls us also empowers us to walk in obedient truth. Let us be of one mind and of one purpose: to be filled with God’s amazing Spirit and be ready for His soon return.
