The Art of Deception

The First Lie: A Case Study in Deception

Satan has mastered the art of deception, the art of the convincing lie. The Bible tells us of the first lie spoken on earth. God had commanded Adam regarding the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the midst of the garden, that he was not to eat of its fruit or even touch it. God then told Adam that if he were to disobey and eat of its fruit, the day he did so he would surely die Genesis 2:16-17.

But Satan, who spoke through the mouth of a serpent, made God out to be a liar, saying to Eve “you will not surely die, for God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” Genesis 3:4-5. Eve chose to believe the lie; she took the fruit and ate it, also giving some to Adam, and he ate it too.

In this account of the first deception of man, Satan did not refute a commandment had been given by God, but he did refute the penalty for breaking the commandment; he lied about it.  In that moment of decision, the lie was preferred over the truth; it was more attractive to Eve to disobey God, so she did.

Satan's Enduring Strategy: Repeating the Performance

It profits us to think carefully about the events of that day so we might better understand what has been taking place ever since. Like actors on a stage repeating the same performance over and over, the dialogue may change, and the scenery can vary, but the essence remains the same: Satan lies about God’s instructions to man through rebuttals and modifications, telling man, with his fallen nature, what he wants to hear.

The ninth commandment tells us not to bear false witness (lie), specifically against our neighbor, but we know that lying in all its forms is forbidden by God.  Truth is an absolute imperative and without it we cannot navigate through this life without fatal harm to ourselves.

God is holy, He does not lie and He does not change, Numbers 23:19. What He has said before will remain, whether spoken once or a thousand times, God does not contradict Himself. The great ‘constant’ in everything is God. It is why we can trust the Bible and everything it teaches us.

The Origins of Deception: War Against God

The art of ‘something’ is an example that showcases the very best aspects of a concept, or a subject, or a thing. A good example of this might be the literary work titled The Art of War, which we learn from Wikipedia  is an “ancient Chinese military treatise dating from the late Spring and Autumn period (roughly 5th century BC). . .The Art of War remains one of the most influential works on strategy of all time and has shaped both East Asian and Western military theory and thinking.”

Like the above treatise on war, The Art of Deception has its origin too. We saw it at work in the Garden of Eden where Satan achieved his first, and perhaps greatest, victory in his war against God by destroying the innocence of man. Adam and Eve got what Satan said they would, the knowledge of good and evil, but at a terrible cost.

The Zenith of Deception: Polluting the Gospel

The church was given the “Great Commission”, to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world Matthew 28:19-20. As we do this, consider the instruction James gave us, found in James 3:1, “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.” This is a warning against teaching false doctrine (deception). Mercy will be withheld from those who pollute the gospel, and we bear witness, the wall of truth has been breached many times throughout the ages.

The Art of Deception reaches its zenith when a lie can be mass-marketed and accepted as truth. People can feel ‘righteous authority’ while defending a lie, just as easily as they can with the truth, and be dangerous to the true believers while claiming to be children of God themselves, because their allegiance is on the wrong side of the conflict and they don’t know it; they have been deceived.  Do you not see the truth in this?  False doctrine looks genuine in many eyes.  If we don’t know sound doctrine, how can we know the difference?
